The terminal extension at Kittilä Airport is part of Finavia’s EUR 55 million investment program in Lapland airports. It seeks for more flexibility during the high season in Lapland. In addition to the new terminal section, the airport apron was extended in two directions and aircraft parking spaces were increased. The facilities of the new airport are about 75 percent larger than the old one.
The terminal extension will include 2000 m² of new space. A new café-restaurant and a children’s playground have been invested to quarantee passenger comfort. Surface material at Kittilä Airport is Finnish birch. Designed by interior architect Kari Lappalainen, the KOO interior panel creates elegance to the space with a simple design. KOO panels are massive 20 mm thick and 95 mm wide. The natural lightness of the birch was emphasized by treating the wood panels in translucent white. Because of the regulations for the public spaces in Finland, the panels were treated with Tikkurila’s Fontefire fire protection products. The interior panels meet the highest fire rating for wood, B-s1, d0.
