The fence should be carefully designed and built to withstand rainy fall, cold winter and hot summer days. When building a fence, it is important to choose the materials correctly and make sure that the fence can withstand strong winds and does not come off the ground in the spring when the ground is frosting.
A high fence provides good visibility but shades the yard. The lower fence, on the other hand, extends the days of the yard even when the sun is not at its highest and provides shade on the hottest summer days. There is no limit on using the fence boards. Fence boards can be attached vertically or horizontally. Diagonally mounted fence boards are also a sure eye-catcher, although perhaps a little more laborious to implement than vertical or horizontal boarding. Also make sure that air can pass through the fence boards. If the fence is too tight, a strong wind may overturn the entire fence.
In Finnish weather conditions the fence structures are put to a great test. Be sure to attach the frame posts deep to the ground to prevent frost from expanding the ground under the posts and pushing the posts up. Also, the distance between the frame posts must not be too long so that the fence boards remain firmly attached to the posts and the tension of the wood does not release the fence boards. Pre-painted fence boards improve the durability of the fence as water cannot damage the wood even during construction. When building a fence, always remember to paint all the cutting surfaces of the boards carefully. This prevents the wood from cracking due to moisture.
A thick fence board lasts longer than a thinner fence board. The most common thickness of a fence board is 20 mm. The width of the fence board can be 95 mm, 120 mm or 145 mm. Building of the fence speeds up when you choose a pre-painted fence board. The fence board is then primed on all four sides and surface painted on 3 sides. The primer protects the fence board against bluing and mold, and the topcoat film protects the sun from abrasive UV radiation. The pre-painted fence board also looks immediately finished and the finishing paint consumes less paint. Industrially created indoor painting is high quality, as impurities or bad paint weather cannot affect the quality of the paint surface. If you want to invest in quality, you can choose a 23 mm thick and 170 mm wide pre-painted fence board.
When building a fence, it is important that the water does not stand on wooden surfaces. Rainwater and melt snow should drain from the poles and fence boards down to the ground. It is advisable to cover the fence with a handrail so that water cannot be absorbed from the upper surfaces of the wood. The durability of the fence is also increased by fixing the fence boards with mountings or screws. The use of notch joints often causes problems when rainwater penetrates from the joints and decomposes the wood quickly. It is always important to paint with plenty of paint all attachment points where the paint surface is broken. Also always use stainless steel screws to secure the fence boards.
